Mobility Equipment Program
Living on Orcas Island means being part of a tight-knit, caring community, and the Orcas Island Lions Club brings this spirit to life through its Mobility Equipment Program. Designed to empower residents of all ages, it provides free loans of gently used mobility aids like canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and more to those who need a helping hand.
What’s Available
The Lions, in partnership with the Orcas Senior Advisory Committee, maintain a thoughtfully curated selection of mobility equipment, including:
- Adjustable and quad canes
- Various types of walkers (orthopedic and balance styles)
- Manual wheelchairs and lightweight transport chairs
- Commode chairs, toilet seat risers
- Bath and shower seats/stools
- Other specialized mobility items are available through the Bellingham Central Lions Club’s Wheelchair Warehouse
This ensures that whether someone needs support temporarily, or for as long as required, they can access the right equipment at no cost.
Where & When to Borrow
The service operates out of the Orcas Senior Center’s multi-purpose room and is staffed by dedicated Lions volunteers. Borrowers can drop by during:
Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Fridays from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
If those times aren’t convenient, the Senior Center’s front desk volunteers can also assist with accessing equipment in urgent or off-hours cases.
Why It Matters
Restoring Freedom & Dignity – Whether recovering from an injury, managing a temporary challenge, or living with a long-term mobility issue, access to equipment like wheelchairs and walkers helps people stay safe, independent, and connected to their daily lives.
Eliminating Financial Barriers – For many residents, purchasing mobility aids isn’t feasible, especially for short-term needs. The Lions’ free loan program ensures that no one is left stranded due to cost.
Community at Its Core – This is not just a service, it’s a reflection of the Lions’ motto, “We Serve.” By repurposing donations and drawing on regional Lions network resources, it brings a compassionate solution to local challenges.
