L.I.K.E. Reading Program
Since 2007, the Orcas Island Lions Club has brought the magic of reading to life for our youngest learners through the L.I.K.E. program (Literacy in Kindergarten Education). Founded by Annie Harris, an elementary teacher and dedicated Lion, this initiative is rooted in a simple yet powerful idea: ignite a love of reading during a child’s first school year.
What the L.I.K.E. Program Does
Read Aloud, Every Time
Volunteers go into Orcas Island kindergartens and spend one-on-one or small-group time reading to students — making story time an exciting, memorable part of their early education journey.
Books of Their Own
Not only do children enjoy stories during visits, but they also get to take home their very own books. These are age-appropriate titles, thoughtfully selected and purchased through affordable partners like Scholastic, so kids can build their own personal libraries.
Why It Matters
Sparking Early Literacy
Kindergarten is a pivotal time when a love of reading can blossom — and a well-chosen story, read in an engaging way, can open worlds.
Equal Access to Books
For many young families on Orcas, having books at home may be a rarity. The program ensures every child gets a chance to own books, planting seeds of curiosity and learning.
Community Roots in Education
L.I.K.E. reflects the Lions’ broader commitment to service and literacy, blending nurturing care with impactful outreach on our island.
Our Local Lens
Small Island, Big Impact
In a tight-knit community like ours, programs like L.I.K.E. don’t just entertain, they empower. They give young readers a foundation and spark that can continue through school and life.
Sustainable and Scalable
Even with a modest budget, the program has thrived for nearly two decades, proving that thoughtful, community-driven education can make an enduring difference.
