Orcas Island Lions Club

Scholarships for Graduating Seniors

Each year, the Orcas Island Lions Club (OILC) helps local seniors take their next step after high school by awarding a minimum of five scholarships for academic and vocational pathways. These awards are funded by donations and community fundraisers (think tent rentals and the famous Salmon Barbecue), and they’re reserved for students graduating from schools on Orcas Island.

What the scholarships cover

OILC administers several named awards — some academic (for four-year universities) and some vocational (for technical programs, apprenticeships, and two-year colleges). In recent years the program has typically offered five or more scholarships of varying amounts, reflecting both named funds and annual fundraising capacity.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants are graduating seniors from Orcas Island, including Orcas Island High School, and Orcas Christian School, Spring Street International School, OASIS, and home schooled students (GED accepted). There is no minimum GPA to apply. The academic awards focus on students heading to four-year colleges; the vocational awards prioritize students preparing for careers such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, dental/medical assisting, veterinary assisting, the arts, and more.

How recipients are selected

Applications are scored using a multi-factor review and an in-person interview with the Lions Scholarship Committee. Reviewers consider academic plans and goals, school and community involvement, service, relevant work experience, special circumstances/needs, and financial context. Final matching to a specific named scholarship happens after the committee ranks applicants.

What applicants submit

A complete packet typically includes: transcript, a student financial statement (and FAFSA results if available), and a personal essay addressing goals, activities, service to the community, and any special circumstances. Interviews are required. (Deadlines and interview dates are set annually; historically, deadlines have fallen in early May.)

How to find the current year’s details

Each spring, the high school publishes a Local Scholarship Booklet and application template, and the Lions post current instructions on their website. You can also email scholarships@orcasislandlions.org for up-to-date materials and dates.

Why it matters

These scholarships are a visible way the island invests in its own, opening doors to college, trades, and technical training for local grads. In addition to the Lions’ awards, the island’s broader scholarship ecosystem frequently mobilizes significant support for each class, underscoring the community’s commitment to education and workforce readiness.
